What paintless dent repair actually is
Paintless dent repair (PDR) removes dents without touching the paint. A technician reaches the back of the panel, and using specialised rods and a reflected light board that exposes every high and low point, works the metal gradually back to its original contour. Nothing is filled, sanded or resprayed.
That matters more than it sounds. A factory finish is applied and cured in conditions a body shop cannot reproduce, and any refinished panel — however well matched — is a refinished panel on a vehicle history report. Keeping the original paint keeps the car’s value.
When dent repair can be done paintlessly
PDR is the right method when the metal has been displaced but not stretched or torn, and the paint is intact. It suits:

What dent repair costs in Dallas

How the repair works, in three steps
Hail dents, and the insurance side
Collin and Dallas counties sit in one of the most hail-prone corridors in the country, and one spring storm can put dozens or hundreds of small dents across every horizontal panel at once. This is where PDR earns its reputation: a car that would otherwise need its roof, hood and trunk resprayed can often be brought back with the factory paint intact.
Hail claims also run through insurance more often than not. Under Texas Department of Insurance guidance, an insurer may suggest a repair shop but cannot require you to use one.
European, luxury and lease-return cars
A large share of the dent work in this shop is on German and British cars from Plano, Frisco and north Dallas — BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar, Land Rover and Mini come through regularly. Two things make these vehicles different, and both argue for paintless repair where it is possible:
Aluminium panels. Several of these makes use aluminium for hoods, doors or wings. Aluminium has less memory than steel, so it does not want to return to its original shape the way steel does. It needs slower, more patient work and more heat management — it is very much still a PDR job, but not a quick one.
Resale and history. On a car where the paint is a significant part of the value, a refinished panel is a permanent mark against it. Keeping the original finish is worth more on these vehicles than the repair itself costs.
Lease returns. If you are handing a car back, door dings and shallow dents are exactly what a return inspection charges for, and the charge is usually well above what the repair costs. It is worth getting the car looked at before the inspection, not after.
After the repair
There is no cure time and no paint to protect, so there is nothing you need to do differently after a paintless repair — you can wash the car the same day. Worth knowing for next time:
Small dents are also cheaper to fix than large ones, and a dent that has not cracked the paint stays a PDR job. Once corrosion starts at a crack, it stops being one.

How long does paintless dent repair take?
A single door ding is usually an hour or less, and often done while you wait. A shallow crease takes longer because the metal has to be brought up gradually along its whole length. Hail damage across several panels is measured in days rather than hours, depending on the dent count. We give you a time with the estimate, before you commit.
How much is PDR per dent?
In the Dallas area, typically $50 to $150 per dent. Size, depth, position on a body line, and how accessible the back of the panel is all move the price within that range. Multiple dents on one panel are cheaper per dent than the same dents spread across the car.
Will the dent come back?
No. The metal is returned to its original shape rather than covered, so a correctly finished paintless repair is permanent. If the panel is struck again in the same place, that is new damage.
Can you repair a dent on a body line or crease?
Often, yes — but it is the hardest kind of PDR and it takes considerably longer, because metal along a sharp line is under more tension and moves less predictably. A shallow crease is usually workable. A sharp crease that has stretched the metal is not, and we will tell you which one you have rather than start and stop halfway.
Does paintless dent repair work on aluminium panels?
Yes, and a good deal of the work we do is on aluminium, because several European makes use it for hoods and doors. Aluminium holds its deformed shape more stubbornly than steel, so it needs slower work and careful heat control. It is a longer job, not an impossible one.
Will my insurance cover hail dents?
Hail is normally covered under comprehensive cover rather than collision, and in Texas comprehensive claims generally do not carry the same consequences as an at-fault claim — but your deductible and policy terms decide whether claiming is worth it on a small dent count. We will give you the repair figure in writing so you can compare it against your deductible before you file.
Do I have to use the shop my insurer recommends?
No. Texas Department of Insurance guidance is explicit that an insurer may give you a list of preferred shops but cannot require you to use one of them.
